Nizwa Courtyard House
Courtyard, arcade & majlis · Nizwa
A traditional courtyard reimagined: a long reflecting pool between date palms, a shaded arcade with a timber-beamed majlis, and lime-plaster walls that glow in the afternoon sun.
The family's old house in Nizwa had a courtyard nobody used — too hot by day and too dark at night. We kept its proportions and changed how it works. A long, shallow pool now runs down the centre, cooling the air and reflecting the arcade; four date palms and frangipani trees in raised planters give shade where people actually sit; bougainvillea spills over the walls.
The arcade was rebuilt with five arches and a ceiling of dark timber beams, recalling the forts of the interior. Behind it, a majlis with low seating faces the water. Brass lanterns hang in each arch, so the courtyard becomes the family's evening room.
