Designing a clinic patients trust
Light, sound and the first ten seconds: what we learned designing healthcare interiors that feel calm instead of clinical.

A clinic is a building people would rather not visit. Good design can't change that, but it can change how the first minutes feel. Three things matter most.
Light without glare
Indirect light — coves, washed walls, a ring in the ceiling — calms a room far more than rows of downlights. Save the bright, focused light for treatment rooms.
Quiet surfaces
Hard, easy-to-clean floors are necessary; add acoustic panels, timber slats and soft seating so the waiting area doesn't echo.
A clear first view
From the door, a patient should see the reception, the waiting seats and the way to the treatment rooms. When nobody has to ask where to go, nobody feels lost.
